Akkermansia muciniphila (A. muciniphila) is a promising next-generation probiotic that can influence the host immune system. Studies suggest that different strains of A. muciniphila may have distinct effects. Specifically regarding the AH39 strain: 

Treg modulation: Oral administration of A. muciniphila AH39 influences the proportion of regulatory T cells (Tregs) in the mesenteric lymph nodes and spleen of mice, both in specific pathogen-free and germ-free conditions.

Immune activation: AH39 may also act as a T cell receptor cognate antigen, potentially evoking an in vitro immune activation. 

General effects of A. muciniphila on Tregs

Protection against inflammation: In mouse models of obesity, A. muciniphila treatment has been shown to increase the fraction of Tregs within the total CD4 T cell population, reducing visceral adipose tissue inflammation and expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines like IL-6 and IL-1β.

T1D protection: A. muciniphila can increase the number of Tregs in the pancreatic islets of non-obese diabetic (NOD) mice, promoting the expression of IL-10 and TGFβ, which may contribute to protection from developing type 1 diabetes (T1D).
